Project Overview

The project was a concept design for a new ‘Meet & Eat’ multipurpose facility at the Adidas Group’s corporate headquarters in Herzognaurach. The Adidas Group has been based in Herzognaurach since its inception, with the World of Sports Headquarters emerging through a series of incremental developments since 1999. The latest iteration of the World of Sports – Stage V – will see the development of two new buildings, including a new office facility in the south east campus and a ‘Meet & Eat’ multi-purpose facility that will service both the existing campus and the new expansion.

The Meet & Eat facility will serve as a meeting point for the entire site along as a point of contact for VIPs and visitors to the World of Sports. The facility is to be the first point of engagement with the World of Sports, as well as a second home for employees of the Adidas Group, so it was important that the design present a seamless and effortless user experience.

The Meet & Eat facility provides for a diverse range of activities. It will include spaces for conferences & meetings, events – both for the public and for workers only, food & beverage outlets, in addition to VIP space and promo facility. This hybridised arrangement of functional activities is unique to the world of sports and presents an extremely complex architectural challenge. The design must provide the flexibility for each of these activities to be separated and operate independently with a distinct identity, or to be connected together as required within the larger complex. These functions require intensive servicing, with a considerable amount of the building area dedicated to back of house facilities to support the more public activities of the building. The design provides for an efficient and robust servicing strategy that consolidates the service and technical rooms of the project into centralised core that connects to the various functional spaces without crossing the ‘public’ spaces of the building.

The design for the Meet & Eat building is formed as a series of discrete pavilions in the landscape, connected by a common atrium and shared space. Each of the functional zones is accommodated in a separate volume, arranged to form a constellation of pavilions that are orientated towards the key access points and features of the surrounding master plan. The pavilions are held together by a flexible use atrium, which forms the main access to all parts of the building, as well as a flexible use space that accommodates overflow from the different functional pavilions, as well as a the co-working component of the brief.
